How to send money on WhatsApp in Nigeria

No app, no USSD. Type who and how much, check the name, confirm, approve with your PIN. Here is exactly what the chat looks like, what it costs, and what the limits are.

You can send money to any Nigerian bank account from a WhatsApp chat. This is the whole process, with the real messages, so you know what to expect before you try it.

What you need

  • A Kolet account. You open it inside WhatsApp: say hey to Kolet, pick personal or business, tap the link, and you get your own account number at Rubies MFB in about a minute. How that works
  • Money in your Kolet balance. Anyone can pay it from any bank app using that account number, and it lands instantly.

Step one: say who and how much

Send 5k to Emeka

If you have sent to Emeka before and saved him with a nickname, that is all it takes. For someone new, give the account number and the bank:

Send 5k to GTBank 0123456789

Kolet looks the account up and shows you the name on it before anything moves.

Step two: check the name, then confirm

You're about to send ₦5,000.00 to: EMEKA OKONKWO GTBank — 0123456789 Fee: ₦10.75 Total: ₦5,010.75 Should I proceed?

Under that come two buttons, Confirm and Cancel. Read the name. A bank transfer cannot be reversed once it is sent, so this card is the moment to catch a wrong digit.

Step three: approve with your PIN

From ₦5,000 upwards, confirming is not enough. Kolet sends a link that opens a page where you enter your PIN:

This payment of ₦10,000.00 needs your PIN. Tap below to approve it securely. The link works once and expires in 10 minutes. Never type your PIN here in the chat. Forgot it? Reset at heykolet.com/reset-pin

Your PIN never goes into the chat. The page works once and expires in ten minutes. Below ₦5,000, tapping Confirm is the approval.

What comes back

āœ… Transfer Successful Amount: ₦5,000.00 To: EMEKA OKONKWO Bank: GTBank Account: 0123456789 Reference: KLT-7E810F9C2685 Date: 03 Oct 2026, 02:04 PM šŸ’° Available balance: ₦42,310.50

A PDF receipt follows in the same chat. Transfers normally land in under three seconds.

What it costs

Kolet charges the same bands every Nigerian bank uses: ₦10 up to ₦5,000, ₦25 from ₦5,001 to ₦50,000, and ₦50 above that, plus 7.5% VAT on the fee. From ₦10,000 the government's ₦50 stamp duty applies as well, and it is shown as its own line on the card. Sending to another Kolet user is free. The full breakdown is in Bank transfer charges in Nigeria explained.

How much you can send

A verified account with one of BVN or NIN can send ₦50,000 per transfer and per day. With both on file the limit is ₦200,000. Say "raise my limit" in the chat and Kolet sends a link to add the one you are missing. Details in Transfer limits by tier.

No account number? Use their phone number

If all you have is a phone number, send to that instead. The person gets a WhatsApp message and chooses whether to collect the money to a bank account or keep it on Kolet. If they do nothing for 24 hours, you get a full refund. How that works

Common questions

Do I need to download an app?
No. Kolet runs inside WhatsApp. There is nothing to install and no USSD code to remember.
Can I send to someone who is not on Kolet?
Yes. Send to their bank account, or to their phone number and they collect it to any bank.
Can a transfer be reversed?
A bank transfer cannot, which is why Kolet shows the account name before you confirm. A transfer to a phone number can be cancelled any time before the person collects it.
What if I forget my PIN?
Reset it at heykolet.com/reset-pin. Kolet never asks for your PIN in the chat.
